It has been announced that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) will be available from English general practices for weight loss from today.
THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR LEICESTER, LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND AREA. AT THE MOMENT GENERAL PRACTITIONERS CANNOT PRESCRIBE MOUNJARO IN THIS AREA.
NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who commission services have not yet decided how this will be arranged locally, and advise that Mounjaro will not be available locally until at least August 2025.
Dr Grant Ingrams (Chief Executive, LMC) said “We know that many patients will be disappointed that they cannot access this effective weight loss medication in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We are asking patients not to approach their general practice of make an appointment to discuss this at the moment. Once it is available, this will be announced, but this will not be until at least August
2025.”

Right to Choose - Tier 3 Specialist Weight Management Services (SWMS) - Update
Notice from ICB
We appreciate patients may ask GPs to refer to non-contracted providers, through ‘right to choose’ to receive tier 3 specialist service from other providers, please can we remind practices:
LLR ICB does not hold contracts with any other providers apart from UHL and has advised all such providers, while the local model is being developed, and the Tier 3 Specialist Weight Management Service is paused, the ICB will not pay for care or treatment offered to any new patient referrals accepted by non-contracted providers.
The ICB is working with the LMC to develop information for patients wanting weight loss treatments which practices will be able to use on their websites and in communications to patients.
